If you’ve stepped into a club during the past year, there’s a strong chance that you might have heard a Wheats record. This dynamic new talent has gone from being a local mainstay in England to receiving recognition from some of the world’s most eminent musical talent
Heeding his father’s example from a young age—a dedicated vinyl collector and well renowned DJ in his own right—Wheats’ passion for music was incubated before he’d even stepped foot in a nightclub after the musical blueprint was laid out for him by his close family.
At 18, he managed to accumulate frequent bookings in his hometown, Portsmouth, where he quickly gained a strong local following and won a residency at Love Amplified. This caught the attention Mutiny Festival, who swiftly enlisted his talents.
It was, in fact, during Mutiny festival that he would happen to meet New Jersey house legend Kerri Chandler in a rather fortuitous turn of fate. After listening to Wheats’ demos on the spot, Chandler immediately played his tracks during his set the same afternoon. Chandler subsequently signed him to MadTech records—an off shoot of Kerri’s MadHouse record label—specialising in tech-house, minimal and big room.
Wheats continues to impress with each release, showcasing an inimitable talent and signature sound that has proved increasingly popular in recent memory. Forthcoming releases have been planned on Nic Fanciulli’s Saved, Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound and Lee Foss’ Repopulate Mars.
Wheats has amassed a worldwide following and cultivated broad international gigging experience. He has performed in Miami, Berlin, Amsterdam, Ibiza, London and Montreal, gracing the decks at some of the most renowned clubs across the continent; 338, EGG, and Hi Ibiza have all played hosts to his talents. He was also invited to play at Elrow festival, one of Wheats’ crowning achievements.
Wheats has built up an enviable following, garnering support from industry heavyweights such as Pete Tong, Danny Howard, Calvin Harris, Lee Foss, Alan Fitzpatrick, Solardo, HotSince82, Nicole Moudaber, Adam Beyer, Green Velvet, Eats Everything, Jamie Jones and Yousef. He clearly seems to have made a strong impression on the music establishment, winning over top DJ’s with his sets and original productions
One thing is certain; this young man is showing no sign of stopping just yet, his potential clear to see and his talent untapped and raw. With support in all the right places, Wheats can firmly assert himself at the crest of the tech wave, a stalwart performer and producer who continues to dazzle critics and crowds with consistently solid output.
